Blood Folk comes from the folk art, folk medicine and folk ways I've learned since moving into a 130 year old house in a small town. I've taken up new hobbies like hand-embroidery, growing veggies, canning and preserving food for winter, and making medicinal tinctures from the weeds in my back yard.

Blood Folk also comes from the folklore and folk tales I dug up from the roots of my family tree. I discovered Mohawk tribal connections and a sad Salem Witch Trial story in the ancestral lines. These folksy, rootsy experiences and discoveries came together to help make Blood Folk.

This is a sad folk tale that has a special place in my heart via the family tree.

Back in the somber, puritan community of Salem, Mass in the 1690's, an 11yr old girl named Abigale Williams and some of her friends were overwhelmed with boredom, oppression and very few "unsatinic" ways to have fun. But an exotic slave named Tituba secretly captivated the girls with exciting stories and rituals from where she came. Until one day they were caught in a type of ritual that shocked the town to its puritan core. Presumably, instead of having to cope with the responsibility of having participated at will, Abby and the girls acted possessed by demons. They further deflected blame onto others by claiming the possessed ability to see witches...

The rest is history: a small town sent into mass hysteria with hundreds accused of Witchcraft, and 20 souls executed. Among those killed, an elderly married couple: Giles and Martha Corey. Martha was hung, and Giles was pressed to death under the weight of stones. He left in his wake the folklored "Curse of Giles Corey" which inflicts a heart or blood ailment upon every Salem sheriff ever since. Also among those hung at Gallows Hill: two sisters with the maiden name Towne.

Seven generations later in southern Minnesota, the paths of a surviving Corey man and a surviving Towne woman met again. They were my great great grandparents.

In time for the harvest season and Halloween, Jenny Dalton returns with songs that conjure Indian summer road trips, autumn strolls, Native American wisdom and then darker visions of devils, demons and witch trials.

She amps up her enchanting piano-based indie-pop style with the powerful, driving forces of
a band featuring an unlikely pairing of members from the Seawhores and former members of
Cloud Cult. Also, in a successful experiment she recorded a few tracks completely on her own
which allowed her to fully develop the dreamy, cinematic mood of those songs. Blood Folk was
recorded in a Rocky Mountain cabin, at Jenny’s home studio, and with the band at a recording
studio in St Paul.

Jenny Dalton moved into a 130 yr old house hidden away from her Minneapolis stomping
grounds and became interested in folk art, folk medicine, and folklore with her new small-town
lifestyle. She researched her family tree and discovered ancestors executed in the Salem Witch
Trials and roots in the Mohawk tribe. A two-week venture into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado
inspired more connections to the land and the past. These discoveries and experiences have
woven their threads in the songs for the new Blood Folk EP.

Dalton taught herself how to play piano and began composing original songs at 8 yrs old. She was influenced by post-punk era bands, and her music has been compared to Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Sia, Vienna Teng and others. (Visit Jenny Dalton's Bio)

Festival in the Clouds

I absolutely cannot wait to hop a plane to the Colorado Rockies to see the wonderful people of Alma again after my serendipitous visit there 2 years ago. I will be playing at their 2-day outdoor festival on Saturday (all the festival details).

Studio Decor

In my home studio, I painted the walls orange and the ceiling a raspberry-type color. It seemed like a good idea at the time (energizing and such) but it's become a bit overwhelming, oppressive and it sucks up a lot of the light so it feels cave-ish in there.

Maybe I'm just coming up with excuses not to sit down and work on the album, but I get kind of particular about my work environs - I need to make sure there's a good "chi" flow!

So I'm in the middle of a re-decoration project that will involve some thrifty shopping and re-painting. I found a lot of inspiration in various other work spaces, and here's the "stylesheet" for my own. I'm ready to change things up!

Summer has been perfect so far: I planted a veggie garden from seeds (I recently picked my first homegrown cucumber!), played some intimate shows beside my favorite lake in Castle Danger, made a 4th pilgrimage to the House on the Rock, I've been making exciting headway in the studio as my own engineer, and I'm looking forward to getting the band back together in September in a new practice space!

This Saturday the 21st: NE Mpls, 2-8pm (I play at 6pm)
While the live show calendar has been in hibernation, I'll come out (as if for my own little groundhogs day) to play an outdoor solo performance this Saturday the 21st. It'll be a relaxed afternoon as part of the Sun Machine Co-op's free annual event in Northeast Minneapolis. The fest will be at the Basin Amitheater just south of Jackson Square Park. I hope you can make it! Here are the details

A Profusion of Blood

The other night, I had a dream that my boyfriend and I were homeless and surfing abandoned apartments and hotel rooms in a strange version of New York City. We were preparing to move on to the next one, and then one morning he was gone. But my sister came to visit me. I told her how glad I was to see her, but she told me that she already saw me last night and was concerned because I was acting weird. I had absolutely no recollection of seeing her, so she took me to the hospital.

Again, another memory lapse as suddenly nurses were preparing me for an urgent and extreme procedure to diagnose a rare, terminal disease. Since I didn't know I'd already been examined, I was wondering how they could be so urgent already rushing around me, I thought I'd just gotten there. One of the nurses was telling me my boyfriend's abandoned car was found and filled with stolen medication to help treat this disease that I had no idea I'd been showing any symptoms of.

The procedure was performed using an instrument that had a clear plastic hose inside which there was a long, sharp needle. In order to diagnose this rare disease, they had to shoot the needle through my neck, into my head and through my brain. If I was positive for this terminal disease, then nothing would happen. However, if I was disease-free and healthy, then the procedure would make me gush blood out of my face. I was preparing (and hoping) for a profusion of blood with a towel in front of me, taking my sister's hand, and bracing myself... and then I woke up.

I didn't like that dream.

I'm from Minneapolis, MN, and I've been writing songs on piano & keyboard since I was about 8. But I've never formally learned how to play which sometimes makes it difficult in a band situation when I can't say what key a song is in for example, but we manage. I've had the privilege and honor of working with Twin Cities musicians including Dan Greenwood (drums), Deborah Copperud (cello), Sean Hoffman (bass), Adam Marx (bass), Cody Weigel (guitar), and many more.

The things that are currently important and inspiring to me are: my house which is very old, canning & pickling things, hand embroidering things, trying to grow things (especially to make into medicine), enjoying the St. Croix River valley, researching my ancestry (which includes executed "witches" in Salem, Dutch traders marrying Mohawk "princesses," Irish castles and other fruits of the family tree), and maybe most significantly, my spirituality.

I do most of my recording at home, and I have 2 cats named Leo and Lola who try to help me record songs by always being in my face. Garden

I'm a first-time gardener! My backyard is mostly shady, but I have a tiny patch of sunlight for a tiny garden. I had grand landscaping ideas (including plans to revamp my garden shed as a sweat lodge sauna and/or chicken coup...I didn't see the ideas as completely incompatible as long as the hens aren't in the sauna while it's going. I finally gave up the idea thinking about the smell), but landscaping gets expensive in a hurry. I decided to do a staw bale garden because I've heard that works pretty well, and it's a cheap, cute way to do a raised bed. I'll plant snap peas in there, some tomatoes and other climb-y, vine-y types.

Hopefully I'm not too late to start from seed, but I put jack-o-lantern pumpkin seedlings, chive seedlings, and giant moonflower seedlings in the ground this weekend.

Possible Summer Projects

- Build & install a Bat House: We have Little Brown Bats in Minnesota, and each bat will eat up to 8000 skeeters in one night! I think they're cute - they look like hamsters with wings. Anyhoo, the poor critters have tough times finding good places to live, so I'd like to provide room and board. In turn, I'll have a skeeter-free yard. Bat houses are simple, I'll probably make one like this

- Sprout seedlings without killing them(first attempt failed, more determined this time)

- Help seedlings grow into flowers & veggies in dirt and in straw bales (straw bale gardens are cheap, simple & nice raised beds)

- A rain barrel would be good

- Renovate garden shed to accomodate hens
